Of Jewish parentage, Rojas received a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Salamanca about 1490. He later moved to Talavera, married, practiced law, and served briefly as lord mayor. The first version of La Celestina appeared under the title Comedia de Calisto y Melibea (1499) and contained 16 acts. A later version, Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea (1502), is in 21 acts or chapters.

The custom of referring to the work as La Celestina began with the Italian (1519) and French (1527) translations. La Celestina was one of the first works to present romance in everyday life.

It combines a tragic love story with bawdy and picaresque scenes enacted between a cast of secondary characters.Universalium.2010.
