Bogdan Reels CompanyThe making of a successful company begins with setting a vision and mission statement after which goals and objectives are made to facilitate governance and decision making. In the case if the Bogdan Reels Company which is a small entrepreneurial business started by Stanley Bogdan and currently run as a family venture by Steve and Sandy who inherited the business from Stanley Bogdan. This paper therefore focuses to address potential problems that might face the Bogdan Reels Company in its bid to grow and expand.
Bogdan’s reels were so coveted that anglers were willing to spend years on a waiting list to buy them and then to pay far more than they would have for reels of only ordinary excellence.
Even after operating in the American market since the 1940’s the proprietors of the company have been operating from a small workshop where they manufacture approximately 100 reels per year using 50 year old milling machine in addition to another obsolete lathe. These two machines enable the company to produce 15types of reels which costs between $1400 and $ 2300.
Attention is laid on the recruitment process whereby the paper illustrates questions that can be asked in order to attract a talented workforce; secondly the need for corporate social responsibility is raised which is then summed up by general knowledge on contracting suppliers and vendors (Norman & Thomas, 2003).In a bid to expand the production activities at the Bogdan Reels Company, Steve and Sandy need to attract and recruit competent and committed staff to enable the company produce more reels each year. In addition there is the realization that the company needs to invest in technology because the fishing industry has been transformed using high tech technologies which demand that Steve and Sandy should ask their interviewees questions regarding their experience with technology. Apparently the secret towards getting the best employees is asking the right questions that aim to understand the potential employee’s motivation and what they are capable of doing. By so doing, a company can identify with the positivity’s in the employees recruited which then will support the formation of a strong workforce and attainment of the company’s strategic plans.Among the questions that the Bogdans acting as the human resource officers should ask include, what they do for leisure and as such a person who answers showing preference for fishing should be shortlisted because he or she has background information on the working of the reels. The other question should be what motivates them? This question should be focused on identifying the interviewee’s affiliation with technology and their willingness to take risks and help the company in its research and development departments (Norman & Thomas, 2003).
In addition, the Bogdans could ask for the expectations of their prospect employees both in the long term and short term. Besides there are many questions that can be asked during the interview but they must all be focused at identifying and retaining selfless employees who will serve the company for a long time.
By so doing the Bogdan Reel Company will gain maximum from committed employees. Given the fact that the employers is the overall decision maker, the Bogdans are at liberty to ask any question as long as it does not make the employees feel oppressed or exploited. Such questions could be; what would you do if you lost your job tomorrow?
What punishment would you recommend yourself in the event you failed to achieve the company’s targets? The second question seeks clarification on the issue of corporate social responsibilities that the Bogdan Reel Company could invest in. First off with the definition, both Steve and Sandy should know that social responsibility defines activities that a company can engage itself into as a way of giving back to the community (Daft, 2008). The most preferred social responsibility for any start up business venture could be providing employment to the unemployed in the neighboring communities. This does not mean that the Bordans have to favor job applicants from their home area but they could consider employing them on terms of merit and placing them in areas that they are best suited. The second social responsibility could involve initiation of community based projects by supporting charities, community cleanup activities as well as sponsoring sporting activities in order to publicize their growing entrepreneurship business. The third question seeks knowledge on the legal consequences of contacts made between a business and a third part of which are the creditors, suppliers and vendors. A contract is a legal document containing an agreement that is binding to two or more parties. The enforceability of a contract is depended on the following basic factors.
There must be a consideration, free consent of the parties, intention to create a legally recognized relationship, a lawful object that is binding to the parties, offer and acceptance. In the case of Bordan Reel Company, all its agreements with suppliers should be made in written and duly signed by both parties.
Moreover a valid contact with vendors or suppliers should have the following four essentials; the contact should be made after free will consent by parties involved, misrepresentation, fraud and mistake (Daft, 2008). There should also be a provision for duties and obligations by the party’s failure to which there is a breach of contact whose remedies are damages, specific performance in favor of the wronged part or injunctions. In conclusion, the Bordans have to abide by the laws directing procedures for employment as a way of avoiding losing its treasured employees or unnecessary law suits. There is need to ask properly structured questions so as to attract motivated and innovative employees to help in the attainment of the long term goals for expansion. In order to gain leverage over competitors and gain customer loyalty, Bordan Reels Company has to participate in corporate social responsibilities such as employing from the neighboring community.

Finally the company should take precedence of their supply chain processes by contracting with their suppliers and vendors in order to reduce possible risks emanating from delayed supplies or failure to supply essential machinery such as the milling machines, lathes, brake shoes and spinning discs whereby the four essentials of a contact involving free will consent by parties involved, misrepresentation, fraud and mistake are taken into consideration.ReferencesDaft, R.
